Democratic rivals clash over Michigan 7th District primary strategy

Former U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and former Navy SEAL Matt Maasdam are continuing their campaigns for the Democratic nomination to challenge U.S. Rep. Tom Barrett in November, despite concerns that moderate voters could split between them and help progressive William Lawrence win the primary.

U.S. Sen. Elissa Slotkin, who previously held the House seat, endorsed Maasdam earlier this month while he was third in polling and fundraising. Michigan State University political scientist Matt Grossman said the endorsement could complicate efforts to consolidate support against Lawrence.

Brink has emphasized endorsements from former governors, labor unions and other officials. Maasdam has argued Brink should leave the race and said Slotkin’s backing helped his campaign gain momentum.

Brink also criticized outside spending in the race, much of which benefits Maasdam by attacking her and Lawrence. Lawrence’s campaign declined to comment on the infighting.
