Lansing schools set cellphone limits for new school year

School districts across Michigan are implementing new cellphone policies for the 2026-27 school year after state lawmakers passed a law banning students from using wireless communication devices during instructional time.

In the Lansing School District, students will have to silence cellphones or set them to airplane mode when they arrive at school. Students in grades 5-12 will receive lockable pouches to store phones during class time.

Districts are responsible for setting their own plans to limit cellphone use. The state law is aimed at increasing academic and classroom engagement and reducing negative behaviors.
