Ingham County voters to revisit proposed hotel tax increase

Ingham County voters will decide Aug. 4 whether to raise the county hotel tax from 5% to 8%, two years after nearly 60% of voters rejected a similar proposal.

County Board of Commissioners Chair Ryan Sebolt said officials changed the ballot language after hearing the 2024 version was unclear and contained too much legal terminology.

Supporters say the increase would add about $4 to the cost of a $130 hotel room and help fund improvements to attractions including Jackson Field, the Lansing Center and the Ingham County Fairgrounds.

Ingham County hotels are staying neutral on the proposal, according to the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association. Choose Lansing President and CEO Julie Pingtree said local hotels do not expect the increase to have a major effect on stays.
