Justice Department filing faults rushed Reflecting Pool renovation
The Justice Department said a rushed renovation of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool led to “hasty and botched work,” contradicting claims from President Donald Trump and Interior Secretary Doug Burgum that vandals caused the Washington landmark’s problems.
The details came in a Friday filing announcing that prosecutors were dropping a vandalism case against former Olympian David Hearn. The filing attributed problems with the pool lining to bad weather, testing failures and shipment setbacks during the $14 million project.
Trump and Burgum continued to blame alleged vandals for the deteriorating lining, algae blooms and green water that appeared after the renovation. The project had been expanded and expedited ahead of July Fourth, raising costs from an initial estimate of $1.8 million.
