Trump says he will halt new Iran strikes pending renewed talks

President Donald Trump said late Saturday that he would halt new planned attacks on Iran while renewed talks seek to wind down the five-month war and revive stalled cargo traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

The announcement followed a series of similar pauses during the conflict, some of which were followed by renewed U.S. attacks within days or hours. The war has sent prices of oil and basic goods soaring.

Trump previously signed an initial agreement with Iran calling for a permanent end to hostilities, reopening of the strait and a 60-day negotiating period over Iran’s nuclear program. He also said he could abandon the agreement and resume attacks.
