Education secretary urges colleges to outline reforms by end of 2026

U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon sent a public letter to leaders of American colleges and universities calling on institutions to commit to reforms on affordability, return on investment, intellectual diversity, foreign influence, merit and an “America first” approach.

McMahon called on every postsecondary institution to publish by the end of 2026 a public statement outlining its commitment to reforms aimed at restoring public trust in higher education.

The effort drew mixed reactions from higher education groups. Some described the letter as less confrontational than earlier federal pressure on campuses, while others said it threatened academic freedom, institutional autonomy and board independence.
