Stevens defends Israel aid stance in Michigan Senate primary

Michigan Rep. Haley Stevens defended her support for continued U.S. military aid to Israel as outside spending and Middle East policy drew scrutiny in the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate.

About $80 million has been spent in the Michigan Senate race, including $60 million on Stevens' behalf. AIPAC and affiliated groups are among the major spenders supporting her campaign.

Stevens said she supports a two-state solution and long-term peace, while criticizing opponent Abdul El-Sayed over his position on Israel. El-Sayed has criticized U.S. aid to Israel, called Israel's actions in Gaza "genocide" and criticized Stevens for taking donations from AIPAC.

Stevens also said she may be the underdog in the race. El-Sayed has led her by double digits in polling over the past two weeks, while Republican Mike Rogers is running unopposed for his party's nomination.
