NAACP condemns force used on handcuffed woman in East Lansing arrest

A video circulating on social media shows East Lansing police officers arresting a woman outside a bar in downtown East Lansing in the early morning hours of Aug. 2, with one officer seen striking her several times while she was face down on the ground in handcuffs.

The woman's family said officers tased and handcuffed her during the incident, according to the NAACP Lansing Branch. She was taken to the hospital for a CT scan for injuries to her face, arms, back and legs, the organization said. She was released and has not been charged with any crime.

James McCurtis Jr., president of the NAACP Lansing Branch, called the video disturbing, saying it shows excessive force against someone already detained and posing no threat. The East Lansing Police Department has placed one officer on paid administrative leave and said it is reviewing internal video as it investigates the complaints.
