Trump signs order creating military spouse advisory commission

President Trump signed an executive order this week establishing the Presidential Military Spouse Commission, a new panel intended to address issues facing service members and their families. Jennifer Hegseth, wife of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, will lead the commission, Trump said.

Trump said the commission would work to develop recommendations on housing, employment, health care, education and child care challenges facing military families. Previous administrations have addressed many of the same issues in various forms.

Jennifer Hegseth's role follows a pattern set by other defense secretary spouses who have advocated for military families. Charlene Austin, wife of former Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, served on advisory boards for the Purdue Military Family Research Institute and the Military Child Education Coalition during her husband's tenure.
