Michigan attorney general renews push for data breach reporting law

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is urging residents to safeguard their personal information following a series of major data breaches affecting people across the state, including incidents involving TransUnion, Corewell Health, 700Credit LLC and Munson Healthcare.

Nessel is also renewing her call for state lawmakers to require companies to promptly notify her office when personal information is compromised. A package of bills that would establish those reporting requirements and strengthen data breach protections passed the Michigan Senate but has been stalled in the House for nearly a year, according to Nessel.

"Data breaches are surging, and delays in reporting leave Michigan families vulnerable to identity theft," Nessel said. "It is past time to enact stronger consumer protections and align Michigan with a majority of other states across the country."

Nessel encouraged residents to reduce their risk by watching for phishing emails and using strong, unique passwords for online accounts.
