Eaton Rapids man taken into custody after sword threat during crisis

A man carrying two swords was taken into custody Wednesday morning in Eaton Rapids after police said he threatened officers while experiencing a mental health crisis, according to the Eaton Rapids Police Department.

The incident began around 9:30 a.m. near Forest and Dutton streets. Officers who first responded found no crime had been committed and lacked enough information to take the man into custody for mental health care.

Additional 911 calls soon reported the man was swinging the swords, prompting a response from Eaton Rapids police, Michigan State Police and a Michigan Department of Natural Resources conservation officer. During the encounter, the man threatened to kill officers and made statements indicating he was in crisis.

He was taken into custody without incident and transported for mental health treatment, police said.
