Howell man indicted on federal child pornography charges

A 36-year-old Howell man was indicted late last month on federal charges of receiving child pornography and possessing and accessing child pornography with intent to view it, according to a criminal complaint filed in U.S. District Court in the Eastern District of Michigan.

The FBI's Child Exploitation Operational Unit identified the man in May after tracing multiple accounts used to receive and distribute child pornography through the messaging app Kik. Investigators searched his home on July 21, when he was present with his wife and three children, ages 3, 6 and 9.

During questioning that day, the man admitted to saving and sharing explicit content via Kik and Dropbox and told agents his sexual interest in children was primarily in girls ages 6 to 13. He also said he used an Onion browser to access dark web sites through The Onion Router.

He was scheduled for arraignment this week. Details on further court proceedings have not been released.
