Michigan adds animal welfare license plate to fund spay-neuter programs

Michigan's governor has signed a bill creating a new specialty license plate that will raise money for animal welfare efforts across the state, with proceeds directed to spay and neuter services aimed at preventing shelter overcrowding.

The plate will cost $35, with $25 of that going toward the fundraising effort. Drivers will be able to order it online or by mail once it becomes available, which is expected to take 12 to 18 months.

Julia Willson, president and CEO of the Capital Area Humane Society, said the plate gives shelters a sustainable funding source as more pets end up in shelter care, with a focus on spay-neuter services and public education about animal care.
