Ex-Democratic counsel breaks with party to back Rogers over El-Sayed

Julian Epstein, a former chief counsel for House Judiciary Democrats who also worked on Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign, said he is backing Michigan Republican Senate nominee Mike Rogers over Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed. Epstein detailed his position in an op-ed published Thursday in the New York Post and in a Friday interview with Fox News Digital.

El-Sayed narrowly won the Democratic Senate primary Tuesday, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens, who had been viewed as the establishment favorite. Epstein said he expects other Democrats to defect from the party over its current direction, and he criticized El-Sayed's positions in his op-ed while praising Rogers as a moderate.

It remains unclear whether Stevens' primary supporters will back El-Sayed in the November general election against Rogers.
