Senate panel advances Blanche’s nomination for attorney general

The Senate Judiciary Committee advanced President Trump's nomination of Todd Blanche for attorney general this week on a party-line 12-10 vote, clearing the way for a full Senate vote before lawmakers leave Washington for the August recess.

Blanche, Trump's former personal defense attorney who has been serving as acting attorney general, secured the committee vote only after making non-binding concessions to Republican senators concerned about a proposed $1.8 billion "anti-weaponization" fund tied to a settlement of Trump's lawsuit against the IRS.

His nomination has also drawn scrutiny over the Justice Department's handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files and over past comments regarding medication abortion and the Comstock Act, as lawmakers weigh whether he would act independently of the president who appointed him.
