Trump renews push to remove Fed governor despite court ruling

The White House has told Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook that President Trump is still considering removing her from her position, despite a Supreme Court ruling that requires he give her a chance to respond to the allegations against her. White House Deputy Chief of Staff Dan Scavino sent Cook a letter citing mortgage fraud accusations first made against her in 2025.

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in June that Trump could not fire Cook without due process, temporarily protecting her seat on the board even as the justices allowed him to remove officials from other independent federal agencies. Cook, the first Black woman to serve on the Federal Reserve Board, has denied the fraud allegations, which have not led to criminal charges.

Cook's attorney, Abbe Lowell, said the allegations remain baseless and vowed to keep fighting the effort, calling it interference with the Federal Reserve's independence. The dispute, which began when Trump moved to oust Cook in August 2025 amid a push to lower interest rates, has now stretched nearly a year, with Cook given weeks to mount a new defense.
