Fall at Harbor Springs building site marks 27th Michigan work death of 2026

A 52-year-old carpenter died after falling about 10 feet while working on a deck at a residential construction site in Harbor Springs on Aug. 10, according to a preliminary report filed with the Michigan Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

The initial report indicates the deck railing was unbolted when the worker fell to the ground. MIOSHA said the information is preliminary and does not reflect findings from its official investigation, which is still underway.

The death is the 27th workplace fatality reported to MIOSHA in Michigan so far this year. That compares with 46 recorded in all of 2025, 40 in 2024, 34 in 2023 and 45 in 2022.
