GM to lay off 350 workers at two Lansing plants starting January 2027

General Motors will lay off 350 workers in January 2027 at its Lansing Grand River Assembly/Stamping and Lansing Regional Stamping sites in mid-Michigan, according to a WARN Act notice filed Aug. 12 with the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. The layoffs take effect Jan. 14, 2027, and affect workers in Eaton and Ingham counties in positions including team member, team leader, assembly operator and stamping operator.

GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly said Lansing Grand River Assembly will go on "downtime" for "retooling" as part of the automaker's $1.25 billion investment in future vehicle production. He said the company expects to recall affected employees once the retooling period ends.

Impacted workers may be eligible for jobs at other GM facilities or for supplemental unemployment pay equal to 74% of their hourly wage under the national GM-UAW contract, Kelly said. The Lansing Grand River site, which began assembly in 2001, builds the Cadillac CT4 and CT5 sedans, while its stamping operation, added in 2016, serves multiple GM brands. The Lansing Regional Stamping site, which opened in 2004, also serves multiple GM facilities. Workers at both sites are represented by United Auto Workers Local 652.
