Five dead, suspect killed after shootings across two Michigan homes

A series of shootings in Missaukee County left five people dead, including the suspect, Michigan State Police said Friday. Officers responding just before noon to a shooting at a home found three people dead and a fourth in critical condition; that person was taken to a hospital.

The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Chad Hickman, fled before officers arrived. During a large-scale search, police found a fourth victim dead at another home and warned the public that Hickman was armed and dangerous.

Hickman's vehicle was later found in a wooded area near Whitlock Lake, leading investigators to his body and that of another person who had been killed. Michigan State Police Lt. Ashley Miller said investigators would work through the night processing the scenes, calling the situation 'heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved.'

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she had been briefed on the shootings and was monitoring the situation, adding that her thoughts were with the victims, their families and the Missaukee community. The names and ages of those killed had not been released as of Friday, pending family notification.
