Warren presses HHS chief over cyclosporiasis outbreak response

Sen. Elizabeth Warren asked Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for more information about the federal response to the largest cyclosporiasis outbreak in U.S. history, saying the administration’s handling of the crisis raised questions about decision-making.

The CDC has counted at least 24,000 confirmed or suspected cases across 47 states, with two deaths and at least 740 hospitalizations. The FDA has traced nearly 10,000 cases to recalled iceberg lettuce from Taylor Farms across 17 states.

Warren’s letter questioned whether politics affected public warnings, citing a Wall Street Journal report about Taylor Farms lobbyists engaging with the White House. Taylor Fresh Foods said it acts in the interest of science and consumer health and rejected allegations of improper influence.
