BBC seeks subpoenas for Trump family members in defamation case

The BBC has asked a Florida court to allow subpoenas for Donald Trump Jr., Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner in President Donald Trump’s $10 billion defamation lawsuit over a 2024 episode of Panorama.

BBC lawyers said the family members have personal knowledge relevant to Trump’s intentions when he delivered a speech before the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riots. The filing said attempts to serve subpoenas by hand were unsuccessful and asked the court to permit service by email and certified mail.

Trump sued the BBC last December, accusing it of deceptively editing together two sections of the speech. The BBC has apologized for the edit but denies it meets the legal standard for defamation and has asked the court to dismiss the case.

A judge recently granted Trump’s request to delay turning over financial records sought by the BBC. A trial is scheduled for February 2027 if the case proceeds.
