Florida primaries reshape Senate and governor contests ahead of midterms
Florida voters delivered a surprise Democratic Senate primary victory to progressive state lawmaker Angie Nixon, who defeated retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman. Nixon will face Sen. Ashley Moody in November for the final two years of former Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s Senate term.
Republican Rep. Byron Donalds won his party’s nomination for governor, setting up a general-election matchup with Democrat David Jolly. Donalds is seeking to become Florida’s first Black governor.
The contests were among primaries that will help determine control of Congress this fall, as Republicans hold a narrow edge. Republican-led redistricting also produced several competitive congressional races, including Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s victory and Rep. Cory Mills’ defeat.
