FBI crime data show sharp 2025 declines, but Trump’s credit is unproven

Nationwide violent and property crime declined from 2024 to 2025, according to FBI estimates based on data from more than 17,000 local law enforcement agencies. The violent crime rate fell 9.7%, while the murder and nonnegligent manslaughter rate dropped 18.5% to 4.1 per 100,000 people.

President Donald Trump accurately cited the size of the declines but claimed they resulted from his administration’s policies. Criminology experts said the reasons for the decrease remain unclear, noting that crime had already been falling after a pandemic-era spike and that rates declined in places with different public safety strategies and political leadership.
