U.S. labels American academic detained in China as wrongfully held

The State Department has designated American citizen Min Zin as wrongfully detained by China after reviewing his June 3 detention in southwestern China. Officials said he had been invited by the Chinese government to attend an academic conference.

Min Zin, who became a U.S. citizen in 2012, leads a Myanmar policy institute and is a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Berkeley. The designation makes him the second American academic declared wrongfully detained in recent months.
