Utah sues former assistant over move to Michigan coaching staff

The University of Utah sued former assistant coach Freddie Whittingham for breach of contract after he left to join his brother Kyle’s staff at Michigan. The lawsuit, filed in Utah’s Third District Court, seeks more than $300,000 for breach of contract and at least $1 million in general and special damages.

The lawsuit alleges Whittingham abandoned his role as Utah’s tight ends coach despite a contract running through January 2027. It also claims he failed to provide written notice, obtain consent before speaking with Michigan and pay specified damages, and recruited Utah players while still employed there.
