Ionia’s sandstone courthouse anchors a collection of historic landmarks
Ionia County’s courthouse is the largest structure built from Ionia sandstone. Quarrymen cut the stone locally, and county offices moved into the building in January 1886. The courthouse was dedicated that July after construction cost $42,380.
The building retains 14 marble fireplaces and a walnut and butternut staircase. Nearby, the Ionia Theatre opened in 1931 for vaudeville and still displays its original arc projector. Bertha Brock Park covers nearly 200 acres and includes a trout stream.
