Former Kansas Sen. Nancy Kassebaum Baker dies at 94
Nancy Kassebaum Baker, a former Republican senator from Kansas who served three terms from 1978 to 1997, died Friday at 94 of natural causes, her son told The Associated Press.
Kassebaum Baker was the first woman elected to the U.S. Senate without previously having a husband serve in Congress. She became known as an independent-minded moderate who worked across party lines and chaired a Senate committee.
After leaving Congress, she continued public service on a bipartisan campaign finance reform commission and later endorsed Democrats in several Kansas races. She also called for President Donald Trump's impeachment after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.
