Benson selects Brinks as running mate in Michigan governor race
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has chosen state Sen. Winnie Brinks of Grand Rapids as her running mate in the Democratic campaign for governor. Benson won the party’s nomination in the Aug. 4 primary.
Brinks has represented the 29th Senate District since 2019 and has served as Senate majority leader since 2023. She previously served in the Michigan House and helped advance policies including the Earned Income Tax Credit, repeal of the state’s retirement tax and free school meals for public school students.
Benson and Brinks will face Republican nominee John James and his running mate, Jay DeBoyer, in the Nov. 3 general election.
