U.S. envoy reaffirms Trump policy recognizing Israeli control of Golan Heights

U.S. Ambassador Tom Barrack retracted remarks suggesting that Israel occupies Syria’s Golan Heights, reaffirming that Washington’s policy recognizing Israel’s claimed sovereignty over the territory remains unchanged.

Barrack said the policy was established by President Donald Trump in 2019. His earlier comments drew criticism from Republican Sen. Rick Scott and other supporters of Israel’s claim.

Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 war and annexed it in 1981. Trump’s recognition of Israeli sovereignty prompted international criticism over the prohibition against acquiring territory by force.
