U.S. strike on Pacific vessel raises death toll in anti-drug campaign

U.S. forces struck a vessel in the eastern Pacific on Monday, killing two people the Pentagon said were trafficking drugs. The Southern Command said intelligence confirmed the vessel was carrying illegal drugs and described it as operating along established trafficking routes.

The strike brings the death toll from the Trump administration’s campaign against boats off Latin America’s Caribbean coast and in the eastern Pacific to more than 210 after more than 60 strikes. The action followed the defense secretary’s announcement that the offensive would expand to land operations in several Latin American countries, though Guatemala denied agreeing to participate.
