Michigan households rank below most states for combined energy costs

Michigan ranked 18th nationally in 2024 for annual combined home electric and natural gas bills, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Residents in 32 states and the District of Columbia paid higher average annual electric and heating costs.

Michigan’s residential electric bills also came in below national and regional averages. Comparing overall energy costs provides a fuller picture than comparing electric rates alone.
