Michigan AG issues final report on Flint water crisis investigation

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel released a report Tuesday detailing the Flint water crisis, the state and local response, and her office’s failed effort to bring criminal charges against nine people, including former Gov. Rick Snyder.

The Michigan Supreme Court dismissed the charges in 2022, ruling that a judge lacked authority to issue indictments under the grand jury law. Nessel said the report is the final step her office can take toward accountability and expressed frustration that the evidence was never presented to a criminal jury.

Flint switched from Detroit water to the Flint River in 2014 to save money while awaiting a regional connection. Chemicals in the river water caused lead to leach from aging pipes, exposing residents and contributing to elevated blood-lead levels among children.
