Federal judge pauses Ohio citizenship-document requirement for voter registration

A federal judge temporarily blocked Ohio from requiring people to show proof of citizenship when registering to vote at motor vehicle bureaus. The ruling came ahead of the Oct. 5 registration deadline for this fall’s midterm elections.

U.S. District Court Judge Solomon Oliver Jr. found the requirement likely conflicts with the National Voter Registration Act, which takes precedence. He also ruled that Ohio’s motor-voter process appeared to improperly limit registration to people who successfully obtain driver’s licenses.

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose said he would immediately appeal. The decision comes as President Donald Trump urges Congress to require documentary proof of citizenship for voter registration nationwide.
