U.S.-Canada tariff fight threatens to push up household paper costs

Toilet paper and tissue prices in the United States could rise as trade tensions with Canada escalate. Canada has threatened tariffs of 25% to 50% on U.S. paper products starting Sept. 8, following Washington’s 50% tariff hike on Canadian goods.

Although much toilet paper is made domestically, U.S. producers rely on Canada for lumber and other raw materials. The United States imported $328 million worth of toilet paper from Canada in 2024, making it the country’s largest foreign supplier.

The broader tariff dispute could raise prices on hundreds of Canadian consumer goods. One economic study found that U.S. importers and consumers absorb 96% of tariff costs.
