Federal judge blocks Texas restrictions on drag performances

A federal judge in Texas struck down a 2023 state law restricting drag shows, ruling that it violated the First Amendment. The decision bars the state attorney general from enforcing the law and denies his request for a new trial.

The law allowed fines of up to $10,000 for businesses and Class A misdemeanor charges for performers. The judge said its broad and vague language could reach cheerleading, dancing, live theater and other common public performances.

The ruling followed a yearslong legal battle and came after an appeals court sent the case back for further review. Texas is among several states that have passed legislation restricting drag shows.
