Farm confined-space deaths declined, but grain-bin risks remain in Michigan

Agricultural confined-space incidents in the United States fell 5.9% in 2025, with 48 cases and 22 deaths, according to Purdue University’s annual summary. Grain-related entrapments dropped 38% to 21 cases, including six fatalities; one occurred in Michigan.

A national agricultural safety expert warned that 2026 could become one of the worst years for grain engulfments and fatalities. Purdue’s report said the available data cannot confirm that the decline will continue and called for sustained prevention efforts and training.

Michigan agriculture groups provided more than $80,000 in grants for grain-bin rescue equipment and first-responder training through a statewide safety program. Another grant cycle is planned for 2027.
