Ionia County resident identified with swine flu after youth fair

Michigan health officials identified a human case of influenza A H1N2 variant, commonly called swine flu, in an Ionia County resident who exhibited swine at a youth fair in Kent County earlier this month.

County health officials contacted swine exhibitors and their families who visited the fair’s swine barns to look for additional illnesses linked to possible exposure to infected pigs.

Michigan also confirmed its first human eastern equine encephalitis case since 2021 in a Roscommon County resident and reported 14,277 cases tied to an ongoing cyclosporiasis outbreak as of Aug. 20.
