Lansing rally renews opposition to Line 5 tunnel project

Tribal leaders and environmental advocates gathered in Lansing on Wednesday to oppose Enbridge’s Line 5 pipeline and its proposed utility tunnel beneath the Straits of Mackinac. Speakers cited risks to the Great Lakes, drinking water and Anishinaabe cultural resources.

Michigan regulators’ recently reissued permit acknowledges adverse effects on historic and cultural resources and requires Enbridge to submit a mitigation and monitoring plan by Dec. 31, 2026. Enbridge said surveys found no confirmed Tribal ancestral burial grounds in proposed construction areas and pledged to coordinate artifact recovery with Tribal experts.
