State approves first large-scale solar project under new Michigan law

Michigan regulators approved a settlement clearing the way for a 90-megawatt solar farm in southern Ingham County, the first project approved under a 2023 law giving the state authority over large renewable energy developments.

The project will cover 870 acres in Leslie, Onondaga and Vevay townships. The settlement includes additional screening, stricter noise limits and state responsibility for removing the project after it goes offline.

The agreement also provides payments to the three townships, funding for legal expenses, drain maintenance and first-responder training. Ingham County negotiated a separate payment agreement with the developer.

The approval comes as 79 Michigan townships and counties challenge the law in the state Supreme Court and lawmakers consider repealing it.
