Michigan Democrats confront tensions over Israel and antisemitism

Michigan Democrats are holding their 2026 state nominating convention Saturday in Lansing amid disputes over Israel policy and accusations of antisemitic harassment within the party.

Attorney General Dana Nessel, who is Jewish, said she would not attend because of security concerns. The decision followed an April convention where anti-Israel activists shouted down pro-Israel speakers, including Rep. Haley Stevens.

The tensions have intensified since Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic Senate nomination over Stevens. Some Jewish leaders are urging Jewish Democrats and independents to support Republican nominee Mike Rogers, while other Democrats say retaining a Democratic Senate majority is more important.
