State approves large solar project in southern Ingham County

Michigan regulators approved a 90-megawatt solar project spanning three southern Ingham County townships. The Michigan Public Service Commission approved the Acceleration Solar project Thursday under the state’s new siting process for large renewable-energy developments.

Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with commercial operations planned for 2028. The project reflects Michigan’s effort to expand renewable electricity as demand grows from data centers, advanced manufacturing and other large power users.

The state is targeting 50% renewable electricity by 2030 and 60% by 2035. The expansion has raised questions about farmland, electricity costs and whether agricultural activities such as sheep grazing can continue beneath solar panels.
