Federal judge blocks deportations tied to criticism of Israel
A federal judge in California ruled that the U.S. government cannot deport noncitizen students solely for criticizing Israel’s war in Gaza or supporting Palestinians. Judge Noël Wise said portions of the deportation provisions violate the First and Fifth amendments.
The ruling followed a lawsuit brought by The Stanford Daily, which said immigration fears had silenced some international student journalists. The Justice Department had not commented on the decision Saturday. The case builds on a similar ruling issued nearly a year ago by a federal judge in Boston.
