Police make multiple arrests during busy Welcome Week weekend in East Lansing

Thousands of Michigan State University students gathered on campus and in downtown East Lansing during Welcome Week ahead of Monday’s start of classes. Heavy police presence continued from Saturday night into early Sunday as crowds filled area bars and streets.

Officers arrested at least six people in separate incidents observed by WLNS crews, including two people after an apparent fight. Authorities have not released an official arrest count or explained the circumstances behind the arrests.

East Lansing police said 40 to 60 officers would operate in the city, with assistance from other agencies. Rain also pushed some students into parking garages and other structures, and police ordered a group gathered in a parking lot to leave.
