Michigan sets aside $350,000 for whitefish recovery

Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division received $350,000 in one-time state funding for whitefish recovery, marking the first dedicated budget line for the species. Officials said the money will support some vulnerable populations but will not address the broader ecosystem problems behind the decline.

Invasive zebra and quagga mussels have contributed to the crisis, while agencies are studying targeted removal methods and ways to use native fish to control mussels. Officials said at least a dozen vulnerable whitefish stocks exist across the Great Lakes, limiting how far the funding can go.
