El-Sayed seeks Jewish voters’ trust after synagogue attack remarks

Michigan U.S. Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed apologized to Jewish voters over past comments linking a synagogue attack to Israel’s war in Lebanon, saying he wished he could retract them and that terrorism is never justified.

Speaking Sunday to about 300 Michigan Jewish Democrats near Detroit, El-Sayed said he hoped to earn their trust. His campaign is interviewing candidates for a Jewish liaison as it seeks to address concerns about Jewish safety, antisemitism and his opposition to U.S. aid to Israel.

State Attorney General Dana Nessel, who has criticized El-Sayed, urged Jewish voters to support him despite their concerns, arguing that issues including climate change, artificial intelligence and nuclear warfare also should weigh on the election.
