Canada targets U.S. industries as tariff dispute escalates

Canada announced retaliatory tariffs of 15% to 50% on about $20 billion in U.S. imports after President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Canadian goods following the collapse of trade talks. The Canadian duties are set to take effect Sept. 8.

Canadian officials said they selected more than 600 import categories, including dairy products, paper goods and appliances, to pressure U.S. officials and affect specific states and industries. Wisconsin food processors and Michigan-based appliance maker Whirlpool are among businesses with trade ties highlighted in the dispute.

The escalating conflict has disrupted cross-border commerce between the countries, which exchanged hundreds of billions of dollars in goods last year. Business groups and lawmakers have urged both governments to resume negotiations.
