Ingham judge blocks Kalshi sports contracts in Michigan

Ingham County Circuit Judge Rosemarie Aquilina issued a preliminary injunction Sept. 1 barring Kalshi from offering, facilitating or advertising sports-event contracts to Michigan residents. The order replaces a temporary restraining order issued in June and remains in effect until a final order is entered.

The injunction covers markets resembling traditional sports betting, including moneylines, parlays, over/unders, proposition bets and in-game bets. Kalshi must use a Michigan-licensed third-party geolocation provider to block access, with a $500,000 daily penalty for noncompliance.

The ruling is not a final decision in Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s lawsuit alleging Kalshi offers illegal sports gambling. Aquilina cited potential financial and mental-health harm, including what she called profound risks to Michigan youth.
