Iran’s inflation crisis deepened before the war, analysts say

Iranian analysts said food inflation had reached 105% before the war began March 9, while annual inflation rose from about 30% to around 70% during the same period. Their comments challenged efforts to blame the country’s economic deterioration primarily on the conflict.

The comments also pointed to years of corruption, mismanagement and concentrated wealth as factors behind rising food prices, declining purchasing power, unemployment and poverty. Economist Hossein Raghfar said public dissatisfaction had reached an unprecedented level in the past half-century.
