2026 survey estimates more Americans own AR-style rifles and carry firearms

A redesigned 2026 National Firearms Survey estimated that 26.4 million American adults currently own an AR-15 or a similarly styled semiautomatic rifle, up from 24.6 million estimated to have ever owned one in the 2021 survey.

The survey also estimated that 44.5 million gun owners currently have magazines holding more than 10 rounds and that firearms are used defensively about 2.2 million times annually. It found that 33.6 million Americans sometimes carry concealed handguns for self-defense, a 60% increase from the earlier estimate.
