Michigan citizenship voting proposal blocked from November ballot

A proposal to require proof of citizenship for voting will not appear on Michigan’s Nov. 3 ballot after the Michigan and U.S. Supreme courts denied emergency appeals Thursday.

The Michigan Bureau of Elections found a large share of the nearly 710,000 petition signatures submitted by the group invalid. The Michigan Supreme Court said state law did not require a longer period to challenge those findings.

The proposal would have required new voters to prove citizenship during registration and some existing voters to do so later. It also would have eliminated an affidavit option for voters without valid photo identification. Two other measures remain slated for Michigan’s November ballot.
